The Ministry of Education has postponed reopening of schools for a week because of floods that have ravaged the country.
In a statement seen by JEDCA MEDIA, the ministry of education said that the ongoing floods have adversely affected several schools in the country, adding that reopening of schools would put the lives of students and staff at risk.
“A number of schools in various regions of the country have been adversely affected by rains. The devastating effects of the rains in some schools is so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities,” the ministry said in a statement.

At least 100 schools have been submerged, with several experiencing wall collapses and roof blown out.
Floods Death toll
Meanwhile, more than 90 people have been confirmed deaths due to ongoing floods with thousands of others displaced.
According to government officials, more than 131,000 people have been displaced, with their properties adversely destroyed.
This comes as the meteorological department warns that heavy rains will continue to wreak havoc in different parts of the country. “Flooding is expected in low-lying areas, flood plains and poor urban areas,” the director of meteorological services David Gikungu said last week.
