NAIROBI, MARCH 18 – President William Ruto Monday met with Meta Management Team (Facebook and Instagram) to discuss monetization for Kenyan content creators.
Ruto lauded Meta’s decision to work with the government in bolstering digital economy in Kenya. The President said that Kenyan creators will in two week be eligible to apply for Meta monetization.
“The eligibility will now be available for content creators in Kenya. That is a big step in making sure that our content creators [and] people who operate on digital space have an opportunity to monetize their talents to give themselves additional revenue,” Ruto said.
Meta, which is the parent company for Facebook, Instagram and Threads said that they are “launching other revenue channels across Facebook and Instagram” and that it will be available to Kenyans in a couple of weeks.
Criteria for monetization
For a creator to be monetized on Meta platforms, one should have a minimum of 5,000 followers, have 5 active videos in the platform and 60,000 minutes watch time. The view-count involves both uploaded videos and live videos streamed on the platform.
It also involves adherence to community guideline/standards, safety and adherence to copyright and intellectual property rights.

Payment through Mpesa
President Ruto also said they have agreed with Meta that payment of creators will be done via Mpesa and the program will be rolled out soon.
He said many Kenyans don’t have access credit cards and other payment platforms thus necessitating the use of Mpesa.
While expressing his commitment to nature entrepreneurship, Ruto said he is working with Meta to ensure that entrepreneurs and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) can leverage Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to scale their businesses in this digital space.
He said “we are working with Meta Group and all other actors to make it much easier for our MSMEs to understand how they can do business, conduct their enterprises in the digital space [and] how we can create more entrepreneurs in the digital space.”
