NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 24 – The National Youth Service (NYS) has called on the disabled persons to take part in the application of becoming service members in the country.

The service made the announcement ahead of a recruitment drive slotted to run from February 5 to 9.

“Persons with disability are also encouraged to avail themselves for the recruitment exercise in their sub-counties and centers provided they can withstand the rigorous physical training,” it said in a notice.
This marks the first time NYS is opening its doors for people living with disability to join the service. In the notice, NYS also revealed that orphaned youths will also be given special preference in its selection upon availing supporting details indicating their status.

It added that only those who attained a mean grade of D and above in KSCE will be allowed to apply.
Subsequently, the application is only opened for Kenyan citizens and must be aged between 18-24 years.
President William Ruto had last year promised to bolster NYS capability as a rich source for labor in the country, promising to ensure that service members are given the first priority in government jobs such as the police force and international labor deals in order to make it competitive.

”We have concluded negotiations with another eight countries on the export of labor. The National Youth Service is going to be the central organization for pre-deployment training so that Kenyans know what they need to do when they go out,” he said.

The move comes at the backdrop of President Ruto’s intensified push to create more jobs through several government initiatives including housing program and digital jobs. The head of state has been very vocal on export of labor arguing that having more Kenyans working abroad will boost Kenya foreign reserves through remittances.
