Huawei Kenya, Equity Group Foundation, and the Open University of Kenya (OUK) have inaugurated the Huawei ICT Academy at Konza Technopolis.

This initiative aims to equip over 10,000 learners with essential digital skills, aligning with the nation’s Digital Superhighway agenda under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The academy, situated within Kenya’s premier smart city, offers flexible online courses in high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Networking, and software development. Graduates will receive dual certifications from OUK and Huawei, to enhance their employability in the digital economy.

Beyond education, the partnership introduces a Virtual Innovation Hub, enabling students to develop technological solutions addressing real-world challenges in sectors like agriculture, education, health, and fintech.

Additionally, the Equity Group Foundation plans to leverage the academy to expand its digital health services, particularly in underserved rural communities.

At the launch event, Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao the ICT Academy aligns with country’s push for digital inclusivity.

“This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing Kenya’s digital talent. By launching the Academy at OUK within Konza Technopolis, we are aligning with Kenya’s national vision for innovation and digital inclusion,” Gavin said.

Dr. James Mwangi, the inaugral Chancellor of OUK and Executive Chairman of the Equity Group Foundation acknowledged that “digital skills are essential in unlocking opportunities.”

“Through this collaboration, we are ensuring that young people, particularly those who might be left behind, have a pathway to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.”

Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Vice Chancellor of OUK said the domiciling of the academy at Konza Technopolis highlights its role as an institution that prioritizes digital technology to deliver education.

“Locating the Academy at OUK within Konza Technopolis reflects our role as a digital-first university. With Huawei’s technical expertise and Equity Group Foundation’s commitment to social transformation, we are creating a new model for accessible, future-ready education,” Prof Omwenga said.
