The Ministry of Education has unveiled a team to develop national education data system to assist in planning and management of education resources.
The main function of the team is to set up the Kenya education management information system (KEMIS), to replace the current National Education Mnagement System (NEMIS) which has been criticized to have inefficiency.
Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Bitok said KEMIS will be used in education planning, allocation of resources and that all stakeholders will access the system via mobile phones.
“The envisaged KEMIS will create an integrated database that will be relied upon to guide Education planning and the allocation of relevant resources. Parents and other stakeholders will also be able to access KEMIS through a mobile phone based application,” PS Bitok said.

He added that the rollout of KEMIS marks a pivotal moment in ensuring that data driven decision making becomes a cornerstone of education planning and service delivery in Kenya.
According to PS Bitok, the system will help prevent financial losses caused by fake school registrations and false reporting of student numbers
“By consolidating all learner data, from ECDE to higher education, into one platform, the system will enhance accuracy, transparency, and accessibility. It will ensure that the government has the right statistics on every school to inform the distribution of teachers, capitation ,books and other resources,” he said.
KEMIS is intended to address the longstanding challenges caused by separate registration databases for different education levels, including Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and Basic Education
The system is expected to be launched this year according to the PS Bitok ahead of full transitioning in September.
