Twelve students of Moi University sustained minor injuries when their car crashed on the Nairobi-Nakuru road in Kimende town in Lari district.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in Lari, Francis Njomo said that the students were taken to the Orthodox Hospital in Kimende town. Njomo confirmed that the bus was carrying 50 students.

The bus was carrying third and fourth year Kiswahili students on their way to Mombasa. “The driver stopped under unclear circumstances and the vehicle ended up in a ditch,” Njomo said.

He said that the traffic police have started an investigation to find out what happened before the accident.

“We are investigating to find out how the driver lost control and how the vehicle left the road,” he said.

However, an eyewitness, John Kimani, said the driver was trying to run away from another vehicle that was driving unawares.

Kimani advised motorists to drive with caution, especially in Kimende, Uplands, Magina, Kinale and surrounding areas where there is fog in the morning and evening.

“No one should rush, the weather is very cold. The roads are slippery, and you can’t see what you can see when you drive a car,” Kimani added.

Njomo said the damaged university bus has been taken to Lari Police Station as investigation continues.
