NAIROBI, KENYA, November 21 – In the African set up infertility was considered a taboo and since it was a patriarchal society various notions were adopted in order to protect the man. Notions like infertility is a women’s problem are some of the contributing factors to men keeping quiet yet they know they are sometimes the source of the problem.

The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 20% of infertility to men worldwide while the Kenya fertility society attributes up to 30% of infertility cases to men. This data is a clear indication that there is trouble with our men. As the saying goes “where there is smoke, there is fire”, and this is why we have seen a rapid increase in the number of herbal doctors offering solutions to this issue. Media especially broadcast mediums has created an avenue for herbalists to advertise their products, hence ensuring they reach a greater audience.

One of the major problem when it comes to male infertility is low sperm count. Low sperm count or in other terms Oligospermia is a condition where semen is produced with a low concentration of sperms. A man with low sperm count finds it difficult to conceive naturally although successful pregnancies can still occur. Most men with such a condition have found it easier to take dozens of drugs without knowing they can naturally boost their sperm production.

Foods can influence the reproductive health of a person positively as it can increase the production of testosterone, thereby increasing sperm count. Eggs to begin with are filled with protein which helps to increase sperm count and they also help in production of healthier and strong sperms. On the other hand vegetables like spinach are a rich source of folic acid which is essential in healthy development of sperms.

Making sure that you include a banana in your meal is crucial, as they are high in vitamin A, B1 and C as production of sperms depends on this vitamins. Phytosterol, which is known to improve testosterone production in the body, is a component that is present in pumpkin seeds. This helps in the increase of the sperm count and fertility. These seeds also contain omega-3 fatty acids that improve blood circulation and increase semen volume.
