Vodacom Partners with Starlink to Expand Broadband Access Across Africa

Vodacom Group has announced a partnership with Starlink, the world’s largest satellite broadband provider, to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity across Africa a move expected to transform connectivity for millions, particularly in underserved rural areas.

The collaboration will see Vodacom integrate Starlink’s satellite backhaul into its mobile network, enabling faster expansion of broadband coverage while improving network performance in remote regions.

The two companies will also work together to provide broadband solutions for schools, health centres, and small businesses, in a bid to close the continent’s digital divide.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Starlink, a move that accelerates our mission to connect every African to the internet,” said Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub.

“Low Earth orbit satellite technology will help bridge the digital divide where traditional infrastructure is not feasible, and this partnership will unlock new possibilities for the unconnected.” Joosub added.

Under the agreement, Vodacom will be authorised to resell Starlink equipment and services to enterprise and small business customers, while tailoring offerings to suit the affordability and needs of the African market.

Vodacom said it has designed a suite of industry-specific products including pay-as-you-use backup internet, device-as-a-service, and 100 percent unbreakable connectivity options targeting sectors such as mining, oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, retail, and financial services.

The company said the partnership complements its existing 4G, 5G, fibre, microwave, and GEO satellite infrastructure, adding that Starlink’s high-performance internet will strengthen its customer-focused offerings across the continent.

The move aligns with Vodacom’s Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to grow its customer base to 260 million and expand financial services users to 120 million within five years.

Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Operations at SpaceX, welcomed the partnership, saying it would deepen Starlink’s reach in Africa.

“Starlink is already serving people, businesses, and organizations in 25 African countries. By collaborating with Vodacom, Starlink can deliver reliable, high-speed connectivity to even more customers, transforming lives and communities across the continent,” he said
