KCB Bank has entered into a strategic partnership with UnionPay International (UPI) to strengthen digital payment solutions and support the growing e-commerce ecosystem in Kenya.

The collaboration enables customers to use UnionPay cards for online transactions via Cybersource and Mastercard Payment Gateway Services (MPGS), expanding the range of secure and convenient payment options available.

KCB Bank and UPI say this integration is a major step forward in Kenya’s digital transformation journey, aiming to elevate the e-commerce experience for both consumers and merchants nationwide.

“We are pleased to partner with UnionPay International to enhance our e-commerce payment offerings,” said Jane Isiaho, Director of Retail Banking at KCB Bank Kenya.

“This alliance reflects our continued commitment to providing secure, efficient, and customer-centric digital payment services.”

Through the partnership, KCB will facilitate UnionPay card acceptance across major merchant categories, including supermarket chains, government services through the e-Citizen platform, and prominent hospitality brands.

The initiative incorporates cutting-edge security features such as 3D Secure (3DS) and Expresspay, designed to offer safer and smoother online transactions.

“As we bring UnionPay’s global expertise especially from China’s advanced digital payments market to Kenya, our goal is to enhance transaction security and convenience for users,” said Asad Burney, Head of UnionPay International, Africa Region.

“Our integrated solutions are geared toward a more seamless online shopping experience.”

This collaboration comes at a time when Kenya’s e-commerce sector is rapidly expanding.

According to the Competition Authority of Kenya, e-commerce penetration is expected to reach 53.6 percent by 2025, driven by greater internet access, improved logistics infrastructure, and increased adoption of fintech services.
