President William Ruto has launched the construction of the KenGen-Kaishan Olkaria Green Fertiliser Plant in Nakuru County, saying it marks a defining moment in Kenya’s green industrial transformation.
He said the Sh100 billion project is a step for Kenya and Africa as the continent moves toward sustainable manufacturing and energy-driven industrialization. The venture brings together energy, technology, and innovation to strengthen Kenya’s agricultural base.
According to Ruto, the Olkaria Green Fertiliser Plant will produce more than 480,000 tonnes of fertilizer annually, providing farmers with a steady, affordable and locally produced supply. Subsequently, it will help stabilize farm input prices and reduce the country’s heavy dependence on imported fertilizer.
The project is also expected to create over 2,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, while cutting fertilizer import bills by more than Sh60 billion each year. The head of state said the savings will boost the economy and enhance Kenya’s position as a leader in green growth and climate-smart innovation.
He also said the plant’s use of clean geothermal energy from KenGen’s Olkaria fields will make it one of the most sustainable fertilizer production facilities in the region adding that the government will continue partnering with private investors and international technology providers to expand similar projects across the country.
The construction of the KenGen-Kaishan Olkaria Green Fertiliser Plant aligns with the country’s broader goal of industrializing agriculture and creating green jobs.
“This life-changing initiative will create over 2,000 jobs, cut our import bill by more than Sh60 billion each year, and reinforce Kenya’s place at the forefront of green growth and climate-smart innovation on the continent,” President Ruto said.
