The National Youth Service and the County Government of Uasin Gishu have launched one of the most expansive rural road infrastructure programmes in the county’s history, targeting improved connectivity and economic activity across all wards.
Under the initiative, more than 700 kilometres of roads will be graded and gravelled across all 30 wards. The programme, officially launched at Sinonin in Soy Ward, will be implemented entirely by the National Youth Service through a formal partnership with the county government.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, who presided over the launch, described the project as a major economic and social turning point for the county. He said the road upgrades would play a critical role in linking rural communities to markets and essential services.
According to the governor, improved road infrastructure will enable farmers to transport their produce more efficiently, reduce travel time, and open up rural areas to trade and service delivery, ultimately stimulating economic growth.

“Through deliberate investment in road infrastructure, we are connecting homes to markets, linking our hardworking farmers to opportunity, and opening up communities to essential services, laying a solid foundation for an economy firmly on course for double-digit growth,” Governor Bii said in a statement.

He praised the National Youth Service for its discipline, technical capacity, and track record in delivering quality infrastructure projects within set timelines. He noted that the programme would significantly enhance mobility, connectivity, and socio-economic development across the county.
Speaking on behalf of the NYS Service Commander, Assistant Commandant General Philip Koech said the service was committed to executing the project with professionalism and discipline, reinforcing NYS’s role in national infrastructure development and youth skills training.

Construction of bridges
In addition to road works, the county government is rolling out the construction of 30 bridges across various wards to ensure uninterrupted access during rainy seasons.
“We are constructing 30 bridges across our wards to guarantee all-weather access, reduce travel time, and unlock trade, fully aligned with our Nguzo Kumi Development Plan,” the governor said.
