The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has identified friends and lecturers as key sources of drugs and substances used by university students.
According to data released on Thursday, friends were the leading source, accounting for 66.4 per cent, while lecturers contributed 39.4 per cent. Other sources included neighborhood canteens and bars which contributed to 59.3 per cent, fellow students 56 per cent, online platforms 39.4 per cent and institution canteens or shops 39.4 per cent.
Regarding substance use, the report revealed that alcohol consumption was the highest at 87.3 per cent, followed by cigarettes at 64.4 per cent and shisha at 41.2 per cent.

The data reveals that vape usage among university students stands at 31 per cent, followed closely by nicotine pouches at 30.7 per cent, kuber at 23 per cent and snuff or chewed tobacco at 22.1 per cent.
Additionally, one in every five university students has consumed alcohol in the past month, while one in every eight has used at least one type of tobacco within the last 30 days.
Regarding other substances, one in 22 students has used shisha in the past month, one in 17 has used e-cigarettes or vapes and one in 14 has smoked cigarettes. Cannabis use is reported by one in every 9 students. Furthermore, one in 24 students has used inhalants in the past month, while cocaine and heroin usage stand at one in 63 and one in 59 students, respectively.
According to NACADA, the data was gathered from a study population consisting of undergraduate students from both public and private universities across the country. A total of 15,678 respondents participated in the study, resulting in a response rate of 99.7 per cent.
Public universities accounted for 61.5 per cent of the respondents, while private universities made up 38.5 per cent.
Male respondents were the majority at 54.2 per cent, while female respondents comprised 45.8 per cent .
