Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s comments on U.S. President Donald Trump’s policy to stop giving aid to other countries has garnered international attention, with Trump’s allies weighing in.

Kenyatta said that instead of complaining, African countries should find ways to support themselves and use their resources in the right way and become more self-reliant.

“Instead of crying, we should ask ourselves, ‘What are we going to do to support ourselves?’” Uhuru said. “It’s time for us to use our resources for the right things. We are the ones using them for the wrong things.”

Department of Government Efficiency

Elon Musk, the head of Tesla and leader of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DODGE) agreed with Kenyatta’s comments. He responded on social media, saying, “Good for him!”

In January 2025, President Donald Trump created the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to reduce government waste. He appointed Elon Musk to lead this effort. DOGE aims to modernize federal technology and cut unnecessary spending. Musk will work with experts to make the government work better and save money.

President Trump had signed an order to review and change how the U.S. gives aid, arguing that the U.S. should not “blindly give money with no return for the American people.”

Many African countries including Kenya have been depending on U.S. aid to support key areas of the economy and welfare of their population. These include health and relief food for poverty stricken populations in drought affected areas.

Exit From WHO

Pundits have said that unlike Joe Biden, Trump’s policies are pro-American and any direct aid from American taxpayers to other countries will have to be stopped. This was evident in his executive order to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). Trump said the U.S. was contributing a lion’s share to the organization despite having a lower population compared to countries like China.
