A section of leaders from Western Region has come out strongly to defend Health Cabinet Secretary over the looming impeachment motion.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino tabled a motion seeking to impeach CS Nakhumicha following the ongoing doctor’s strike.

Led by Vihiga Women Representative Beatrice Adagala and Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, the leaders said they are going to stand with the embattled CS.

Adagala said that they are not going to allow Nakhumicha to be impeached, urging the government to find a way to solve doctor’s strike.

“Any member of Parliament coming up with the motion of impeachment [of Nakhumicha], we are not going to allow that. Let the government plan and see how sanity is going to be restored in the health department,” Adagala said.

Savula on his part said Nakhumicha is the only minister from the region and that no one should use doctor’s strike as an excuse to elbow her out of Afya House.

“We know she is the only minister representing us in the national government. We want her to stay there and perform. No one should use the excuse of a strike. A strike is a labour matter and labour matter is being resolved. Don’t target Nakhumicha using labour issues,” Savula said.

Nakhumicha-led health ministry is at loggerheads with Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacist and Dentist Union (KMPDU) over the government’s failure to honor 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The ministry has held several consolidation meetings with KMPDU vain – no agreement has been reached yet.

This prompted section of opposition leaders to plan a impeachment to oust Nakhumicha for what they term as “incompetency.”
