The world’s leading fruits and vegetables trade fair, Fruit Logistica kick off Wednesday, February 7 in Messe, Berlin. The The fair was founded in 1933 by a state owned company, GmbH( Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung), and since then, it has been taking place annually in Berlin, Germany.

The Fruit Logistica showcases a wide range of products, services, and technologies in the fresh produce industries, and connects exhibitors and visitors from around the globe, thus facilitating business opportunities and networking.

This year has attracted over 2700 exhibitors from 91 countries. Key industries players are bringing together over 66,000 visitors from every continent. The exhibition features fresh produce from fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, flowers, and pot plants. Technical companies in the industry also get to showcase ; nursery trees and seeds, cultivation and ripening equipment, packing and sorting machinery, labelling and barcoding equipment, and smart agriculture systems.

The exhibition also features leading companies that provide services and logistics in the sector. Exhibitions span from quality control systems, food safety control, digital inventory management systems, and market research to financial and insurance services. Logistics companies like those in transport, custom clearance, cold storage, and warehouse facilities all come together to showcase the services they offer.

As technological advancements become a crucial part of agriculture, participating companies present their novelties and technological solutions to the problems in the sector, especially food insecurity. Fruit Logistica Innovation Award (FLIA) honours the most outstanding innovation in the entire fruit and vegetable supply chain.

“New technologies can help to meet the growing demand for food and reduce food waste at the same time. Digitalization is already helping farmers to make their production more efficient, profitable, and environmentally friendly,” says Alexandra Prümke, Market Manager of FRUIT LOGISTICA.

FLIA is currently being held by UnicaFresh, a company from Spain. For their outstanding product Zucchiolo, a vegetable cross breed between cucumber and zucchini. Which provides a variety of nutrients and can be used to make stews and salads.

Kenya takes a leading position in Africa to participate in the fair, with 44 companies in the fresh fruits and vegetables, export and import sector applying to exhibit. Such companies include Kenya Fresh Produce Exporters, Signum Fresh Fruit exporters, Fawakih import and export limited, Avodemia Limited, and many more.

This year’s focus will be on Smart Agriculture including digitization of agriculture, for example, with AI and sensor technology, but also on modern, innovative ideas for logistics, greenhouses, and quality assurance
