Kenya Railways has announced a delay of cargo evacuation from the port of Mombasa to Nairobi due to the ongoing floods in Mombasa.
According to a public notice issued by Kenya Railways yesterday, the ongoing floods have resulted in wash-ways and landslides in various parts of the railway network.
The situation has affected normal train operations, including cargo transfer, loading as well as offloading activities in the port
.
“Regrettably, we must inform you that there has been an unexpected delay in the evacuation of cargo from Mombasa and Nairobi and delivery of cargo into the port of Mombasa owing to the heavy rains experienced in Mombasa over the last few days, which have resulted into the flooding, wash away, landslides in various sections of our rail network,” stated Philip Mainga the managing director.
A section of the SGR corridor between Mombasa and Mariakani has also been closed due to a landslide. Only passenger trains are allowed to pass through the section under limited speed restrictions and strict supervision.
The Kenya Railways assured that emergency plans are in place to propel the restoration of normal service soonest.
