Cybersecurity Should Never Be an Afterthought for Kenya’s MSMEs

Kenya’s digital economy is growing fast. Every micro, small, and medium enterprise now relies on technology to operate, from mobile payments and online marketing to cloud-based services. Technology has opened new opportunities, but it has also created new dangers.

Cybercrime is no longer a distant threat that only affects large corporations. Today, automated and AI-assisted attacks target anyone who connects to the internet. Hackers use software that scans for weak systems and strikes instantly. What once took hours now happens in seconds.

The smallest business can lose everything in one attack. A single data breach can wipe out customer trust, lock systems, or drain accounts. For many MSMEs, that means closing their doors for good. The sad truth is that most of these incidents are preventable.

Too many entrepreneurs still believe cybersecurity is expensive or unnecessary. They think their size protects them. The opposite is true. Small businesses are the easiest targets because they rarely invest in protection. Ignoring cybersecurity is like leaving your shop open at night and hoping no one walks in.

AI has made the threat worse. Attackers now use artificial intelligence to write convincing scam emails, imitate trusted voices, and manipulate data. The same technology that helps businesses grow can also be used to destroy them. But AI can also defend. It can detect suspicious activity, alert users, and stop attacks before they spread. The difference lies in who uses it first.

Protecting your business does not require a big budget. It starts with simple steps. Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Back up data regularly. Train staff to spot phishing attempts. Partner with experts who understand cybersecurity.

Safaricom’s focus on cybersecurity leadership, highlighted at the Safaricom Cybersecurity Summit 2025, is a wake-up call for every entrepreneur. Kenya’s economy depends on the trust and safety of its digital systems. That trust begins with the smallest player.

Cybersecurity is not a luxury. It is not something to postpone. It is the foundation of every business that wants to grow and survive in the digital age.
