Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, are set to face Al ahly on the second preliminary round of 2024/25 CAF champions cup after thrashing Sudan’s EL Merreikh 5-1 in the second leg and advancing to the next stage.

The game ended with an aggregate of 5-2 after El Merreikh had beaten Gor on their home turf during the first leg. the second leg took place at Nyayo stadium on Sunday afternoon.

K Ogallo nearly got demoralized after conceding a goal just six minutes into the game, they had to work from behind and that too as a team.

Goal scorers were Chris Ochieng, Alpha Onyango , Alphonce Omija and a brace by Rooney Onyango enough to take them through to the next round.

The comeback only served as a catalyst for Gor Mahia sportsmanship and agility who soon took the lead through Alpha Onyango.

Gor Mahia then doubled their lead in the 34th minute through new signing Alphonce Omija. The towering defender rose above all to meet a corner, sending a powerful header past the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Gor Mahia continued their dominance, creating numerous chances to further extend their lead.

Sharrif Musa was dangerous down the left flank, consistently troubling the El Merreikh full-back. Musa’s relentless efforts resulted in three clear opportunities.

Unfortunately, Musa had to be stretchered off the pitch in the 75th minute due to an injury, prompting coach Leo Neiva to make substitutions, bringing on Boniface Omondi and Samuel Kapen for Musa and Chris Ochieng, respectively.

Rooney Onyango capped the performance with a well-placed shot past the goalkeeper following a brilliant combination between Kapen, Odhiambo, and the tireless wingback. Onyango would score again in stoppage time, sealing a 5-1 victory.
