Athletics Kenya unveiling "Road to Tokyo" initiative.

Athletics Kenya (AK) revealed its 2024/25 activity calendar during an event at Weston Hotel in Nairobi, outlining the competitions and events leading up to next year’s World Championships in Tokyo. The calendar includes a mix of local and international events aimed at preparing Team Kenya for success on the global stage.

While launching the “Road to Tokyo” initiative, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen urged athletes and stakeholders to align with the newly unveiled schedule and set long-term objectives for Tokyo 2025.

“With the 2024/25 calendar now released, I urge all the athletes and their coaches to keep their eyes firmly on the ball. I want to congratulate AK for a job well done… the calendar is quite expansive and includes cross country, marathon, track and field as well as mountain running,” said Murkomen in a speech delivered by principal secretary Peter Tum, according to Athletics Kenya.

“Partnership with the corporate sector is important for the identification of new talent. We need to expand our sports portfolio to enhance our chances of winning much more medals at the international stage. At the Olympics, we clinched six medals, which is far below what we are capable of,” Murkomen added, stressing the need for the federation to collaborate with corporate partners in talent development through local competitions.

AK president Jack Tuwei echoed the CS’s remarks, emphasizing the importance of external support in advancing the federation’s goals.

“Athletics Kenya is currently in a unique position in that the CS has issued instructions that we need to look outside for support as opposed to depending on the Government Financial input alone. It is for this reason we have approached some corporates to support us in this Road to Tokyo,” Tuwei noted during the event.

Among the top athletes attending the launch were Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala and 2015 world javelin champion Julius Yego.

The new athletics season begins this Saturday with a Cross Country event in Kericho, followed by the Run for Health and Fitness 10K Run in Eldoret on Sunday. The World Athletics Championships in Tokyo are scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21, 2025.
