Gor Mahia is gearing up for a critical CAF Champions League match against Al Ahly, who may not be as strong as in previous years due to some key Al Ahly players departure and internal challenges.

Recent developments include the loss of key players, potentially tipping the balance in Gor Mahia’s favor. Al Ahly’s midfield anchor, Malian Aliou Dieng, integral to the team’s structure with his defensive prowess and precise passing, has transferred to the Saudi Pro League side Al-Kholood on a season-long loan.

Dieng’s exit is a significant blow, as he has been a central figure in Al Ahly’s strategy since his 2019 arrival from MC Algiers.

During his tenure, Dieng accumulated 264 appearances across all competitions, contributing eight goals and 12 assists, which were crucial in securing three Egyptian Premier League titles, three Egyptian Cups, and four CAF Champions League trophies.

Additionally, the Red Devils face another potential loss with Ahmed Nabil Kouka, a key midfield player, who is being scouted by Portuguese club Rio Ave.

Kouka, only 23 years old, gained prominence at the Paris Olympics and has been vital in Al Ahly’s recent successes, including securing a bronze medal at the Club World Cup.

Adding to the challenges, South African international Percy Tau is also on the verge of leaving.

After a reported fallout with head coach Marcel Koller, Tau has been deemed surplus to requirements. Despite having a year left on his contract, his departure seems imminent, with interest from South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs.

These potential departures represent a significant drain of experienced, first-team regulars from a squad aiming to defend its CAF title and perform across multiple fronts, including the domestic league and international competitions.

This timing poses a particular challenge as the first leg against Gor Mahia looms between September 13-15 in Kenya, followed by a return leg in Cairo a week later. This transition period could provide Gor Mahia with an opportunity.
