Murkomen Promises to Make Safari Sevens A Premier Event

Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged to uphold the Safari Sevens as a top-tier competition following Shujaa’s triumph at the 2024 edition, held at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

This year’s event marked the first time the tournament was hosted outside Nairobi in its 26-year history.

Inspired by Patrick Odongo, Shujaa secured a 12-0 victory against Shogun Rugby in the final, successfully defending their title and claiming the 2024 championship.

The win comes after Shujaa’s return to competitive play, two months after their participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Murkomen expressed the government’s commitment to working with stakeholders to develop the sport and cultivate talent to strengthen Kenya’s position in rugby.

“Shujaa’s incredible 12-0 victory against Shogun of England in the thrilling final of the 26th edition of the Safari Sevens reinforces Kenya’s position as a rugby powerhouse. We shall work with stakeholders to grow more talent in the sport and ensure that Safari Sevens remains a premier event in Kenya’s sporting calendar,” Murkomen shared on his X account, formerly known as Twitter.

This year’s Safari Sevens featured 10 men’s teams, including Shujaa (Kenya), Kenya Morans, Shogun Rugby (formerly Samurai), Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya Harlequins (2024 Sevens Circuit champions), Kenya Varsity Select, Qatar, Lions Rugby, and Red Wailers.
