Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli on Tuesday met top traffic bosses for a consultative meeting aimed at addressing the rising cases of accidents in the country.

The surge in road traffic accidents in recent times has seen tens of lives lost and families left in anguish.

Masengeli said that among the issues they discussed included the issue of corruption among traffic officers.

“We have observed an increase in road traffic accidents across the country, and that is the reason for which we convened this consultative meeting with all Regional Traffic Enforcement Officers to address the road carnage issue, and corruption in the Traffic Unit,” he said.

The meeting aimed to tackle not only the immediate issues but also the underlying problems contributing to the rise in accidents.

The meeting comes amid talks for enhanced enforcement and stricter adherence to road safety regulations

Some of the road accidents have been blamed on traffic officers who have been accused of abdicating their duties and soliciting bribes.

“We call upon all members of the public to ensure compliance with road safety requirements,” Masengeli said.

Among senior police officers who attended the meeting were Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Lagat, Directorate Of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Boss Amin Mohammed and police spokesperson Resilia Onyango among others.
