Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi told off politicians who view Raila Odinga’s bid for African Union Chairmanship as a reward, arguing that his candidature serves Kenya’s interests.
Speaking in Sabatia Vihiga county, Mudavadi said the talks about AU job being a reward for Raila is misleading and asked Kenya leaders to look at is as a platform to build connections across the continent.

Mudavadi: “The talks about the AU job being a reward system are misleading. We need to create proper dialogue and look at how the Kenyan leadership will open up connections within African States.”
Undermining the bid
The former Vice President said that talks suggesting the bid as a reward will undermine the chances of getting the job adding that “it’s time to provide a united front for the sake of putting Kenya on the map of Africa and the globe.”
He further added that Kenyans need to understand that our country is among the 55 other member states of African Union (AU).
Mudavadi: “We need to understand that Kenya is a member among 55 other members of AU and the chairperson’s position is not about individuals but the nation as a member.”
This comes as Kenya is gearing up to hold campaigns for Raila’s bid for AU’s top job across the continent with suggestions that Raila has secured East African heads of states’ support.
President Ruto has out rightly supported Raila, his political rival and has tasked his Prime Cabinet Secretary (Mudavadi) with a job of popularizing Raila in the continent.

African Union elections will be held between January and February 2025, and if he clinches the position, Raila will replace the current AU chairman Moussa Faki from Chad, whose 8-year term comes to end early next year.
If he wins the position, he will head to Addis Ababa where AU Headquarters is domiciled to begin his four-year tenure.
