Azimio leader asks CSs Chirchir and Ndungu to resign over corruption allegation on the G-to-G oil deal

NAIROBI, NOV 21 – Azimio leader Raila Odinga has called for resignation of CSs Felix Chirchir of Energy and Njuguna Ndungu of National Treasury for allegedly stealing money.

Speaking Monday, Raila said Chirchir and Ndungu committed criminal offenses and abused office alleging that the two CSs stole money from the consolidated fund and spending money way above what parliament approved.

“The CS for Energy and Petroleum Mr (Davis) Chirchir and National Treasury CS Njuguna Ndungu have certainly committed criminal offense, abused office and gone against the constitution. They stole money from the consolidated fund in addition to spending money way above what parliament approved. They must not only resign, they must also be prosecuted,” Raila declared.

Raila further questioned why the signing of government to government oil deal with the Middle East nations excluded the Kenya National Oil Corporation. While simultaneously pointing out to the skyrocketing cost of fuel, Raila questioned why oil prices haven’t reduced even after the government to government to government deal was signed.

“Kenyan would have noticed that even our ministry of energy and petroleum was signing deals with state owned corporations in the Middle East our own national oil corporation is completely left out. How does Chirchir explain the exclusion of this corporation in the favor of shady firms,” ODM party leader questioned.

He continued, “If that is the case, why has the exchange rates not improve? How comes it has not lowered the cost of oil.”

The current prices of oil stands Ksh217 for petrol, diesel retails at Ksh206 and kerosene at Ksh205 in capital Nairobi. However, the pump price in other parts of the country is slightly higher owing to transport costs.

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) attributes the higher prices to the weakening Kenyan currency against the dollar and the implementation of 16% Value Added Tax.
