Since the time Elon Musk took ownership of social media platform X (formerly twitter), he has made several changes in the App right from introduction of payment for blue tick badge to changing name and scrapping of the bird logo.

With all this changes, Musk is not yet satisfied. He has stated that X will now have both video and audio calling feature without the need of a mobile number.

In his X account, Elon wrote that video and audio calls will be rolled out on X soon.

This move has been viewed as a way to stage head-on competition to video calling and audio calling apps like WhatsApp. This has opened up speculation that the new X feature is a direct response to Meta’s audacious launch of Threads, a social media platform that mimicks X.

This will see X compete with WhatsApp (owned by Meta) in video calling and audio calling space that has gained momentum in the across the world even as digitization reshape how people interact.

Other speculation that have surrounded Musk’s plans for X is that he is planning to transform X into an “everything App” mimicking Chinese WeChat App.

WeChat App offers social media access, financial services like banks and even as an e-commerce site among many other services in the App. WeChat is owned by Tencent Holdings, one of the world biggest companies.

Even as speculations piles up on the future of X, the video calling feature will kickstart a serious competition to other platforms with the same feature.
