Kenya Launches Bold Strategy to Anchor Economic Growth on Start-Up Innovation

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 6 – Kenya is stepping up its innovation game with a renewed push to solidify the country’s start-up environment as a key pillar of future economic growth.

At the heart of this shift is a strategic drive to empower entrepreneurs, streamline access to resources, and position innovation as a national economic driver.

Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) CEO Tonny Omwansa, speaking at the launch of the Kenya Start-up Festival, laid out the government’s forward-looking approach to nurturing a dynamic, inclusive, and solution-driven innovation space.

“We are going to work together to fast-track initiatives and programs that make sense and carry the energy to drive meaningful change,” he said.

“We are uniting ecosystem players, start-ups, corporates, investors, academia, government, and development partners to acknowledge shared challenges, celebrate progress, and spark new partnerships.”

The festival, designed as a platform to foster dialogue and cross-sector collaboration, brings together top executives, investors, policymakers, and researchers.

Its goal: to reflect on Kenya’s innovation milestones over the past decade while laying the foundation for more agile partnerships in the start-up space.

Omwansa also revealed plans to develop a digital platform that will act as a one-stop hub for start-ups to pitch ideas, apply for government support, and connect with mentors and investors. This tool, he said, is part of a broader effort to lower entry barriers and boost start-up visibility.

The ongoing dialogue, which includes financial institutions, universities, logistics firms, and development partners, underscores Kenya’s shift toward a more integrated model of innovation one that prioritizes entrepreneurship and research as key levers of sustainable growth.

With KeNIA at the helm, backed by the Ministry of Education, the country is crafting an ecosystem where innovation can move from concept to commercialization fueling job creation, tech advancement, and inclusive prosperity.
