We have all heard the term ‘tarmacking’ which basically means actively to seeking employment. Students should be prepared for it. I dare say job searching is another unit that needs to be taught as well and most importantly understood.
Society has conditioned people to think that one has to go to school, study hard, graduate and get
employment automatically. Sadly, that the case. What is not said is that some people have
really been looking for jobs for a long time and even getting to a point of depression because of the fear
of not being able to provide or sustain themselves.
Recently I had a conversation with someone close who has had rough time searching for a job 7 years
after graduating. She went to interviews that already had preferred candidates but were doing them just
for formality.
She told me that she have encountered those that needed money before an interview is conducted which of course she could not afford because obviously she has no income. Others requires asks for ‘favors’ for someone from the organization to help secure the spot.
She opted to do casual jobs and 7 years later she got a chance to do an interview and finally got the job that she had gone to school to study for. She later said she wished she had been prepared in school that getting a job is not that easy for her to lower her expectations.
Schools should be able to talk openly about careers and the job market and prepare learners for
what awaits them once they leave school. They need to teach that at some point to prepare graduates psychologically on what to expect. Having known that some may resolve to pursue self-employment.
