Waiguru lauds appointment of Wanga as ODM chairperson

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has lauded the appointment of Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga to be ODM’s chairperson.

Waiguru said Wanga’s appointment is a testament that women can take up influential roles in leadership of the country.

“Governor {Gladys} Wanga’s achievement adds to that of our Embu counterpart Cecil Mbarire who is UDA’s chairperson,” Kirinyaga county boss said.

She spoke on Friday during the G7 council of governors Women Caucus meeting in Machakos.

The G7 is a female-governors’ council bringing together seven elected women governors in Kenya. The G7 council is made up of Cecil Mbarire (Embu), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos).

The council has come up will The G7 Strategy, a program aimed at mentoring women leaders across the seven counties, to take up leadership roles and to run for elective positions.

Waiguru said the council is going to rally Kenyans to support re-election of females governors as well as election of new female governors to ensure at least 24 female governors are in office.

“We will rally Kenyans to support the re-election of female governors seeking the second term in office and election of additional one to realize G24 dream,” she said.

Waiguru, who is also the chairperson of the Council of Governors urged the sitting governors who are exiting their officers in 2027 to support their female deputies to replace them.

The G7 council was touring Wavinya’s Machakos county to witness the launch of projects and to benchmark their counterpart’s work in Machakos county.

They also showed support for Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza who is facing impeachment at the senate after Meru MCAs passed a motion to kick her out of office for the third time.
