NAIROBI, DEC 18 – President William Ruto has announced that all teachers who are in internship will be hired permanently after they complete a two-year internship period. He said the policy of two-year internship for workers in Kenya is being implement as it part of the learning process.
“JSS teachers will be in work in January because we came up with a policy as the government that all sectors, before (one) is hired permanently and pensionable, you work as an intern for two years. So once they complete their internship of two years, we will hire everybody,” Ruto said.
The head of state was speaking in statehouse during a media engagement with member of the fourth estate. Ruto assured teachers who are working as interns that once they complete the two year internship, they will be given the first priority. He added that internship programs will be rolled out in other sectors as well , giving example of public service where he says there are interns already.
Interns should Relax
“So they (interns) need to relax, they need to go through the process. They will have the first priority when we hire teachers after the internship and we are not doing internship only with teachers, we are doing internship with many other sector, in fact, we’ve just gotten a cohort of interns at the public service because internship is part of the learning process and the job process,” Ruto assured.
“Our interns who are doing a wonderful job as teachers, they need to relax, nobody is going to take their positions in January. They will continue to complete their internship for two years and which is a government policy and that is understood and after two years they will be hired as we absorb others into internship to graduate slowly like that,” he added.
Asked whether a total of 50,000 teachers who are in internship now will be employed after their internship, Ruto confirmed that indeed they will be hired.
