President William Ruto has lauded United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for its instrumental role in tackling structural challenges faced by developing countries. The president emphasized that these obstacles hinder the pursuit of inclusive, resilient, fair, equitable, and sustainable development.

He was speaking in a meeting with United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General Rebeca Grynspan. During the discussions held at the Eldoret State Lodge, President Ruto highlighted the significance of trade in driving long-term, sustainable economic growth and development.

“We …. need to unite our efforts to continue to stimulate this, for Africa possesses the resources required to foster growth on this continent. Prudent use of trade can boost development and create absolute gains,” he said.

The meeting, which took place just ahead of the highly anticipated UNCTAD conference in Nairobi, showcased President Ruto’s dedication to fostering collaboration and addressing critical development issues. Industry, Trade, and Investment Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria also accompanied the Head of State during the discussions.

Commending UNCTAD for selecting Kenya as the venue for the launch of their flagship report, President Ruto said that UNCTAD is a strategic partner to Kenya in providing support for development. “We strongly believe that UNCTAD is a strategic partner for Kenya, not only in providing support under its three pillars of consensus building, research and policy analysis, and technical assistance, but also in onboarding other development stakeholders so that we achieve as one,” President Ruto said.

The report, aptly titled “Economic Development in Africa,” focuses on the potential of the continent to capture technology-intensive global supply chains. The launch of this report provides a significant platform for Kenya to amplify its voice on ongoing efforts related to inclusive, fair, and sustainable development. President Ruto expressed his optimism regarding the opportunity to advocate for Kenya’s commitment to these crucial development principles.

The collaborative spirit displayed during the meeting underscores President Ruto’s dedication to fostering partnerships which has a potential to bring positive change and advancement. As the UNCTAD conference unfolds in Nairobi, the discussions and interactions that transpired during this pivotal meeting lay the foundation for renewed commitments to trade, development, and sustainable growth.
