Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has revealed the reason for his unexpected retirement from football on Wednesday of 25 September 2024. The 31-year-old made the announcement after a challenging period with injury.
Varane, who signed with Serie A newcomers Como in July, suffered a serious knee injury just a month later. The former French international, whose career has been hampered by injuries, had moved to Italy as a free agent after departing Manchester United.
Having won multiple Champions League titles with Real Madrid, Varane was sidelined from Como’s squad following the injury on his debut. The decorated defender took to Instagram to confirm his decision to hang up his boots.

“For now, to the supporters of every club I played for, to my teammates, coaches and staff… from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this journey more special than my wildest dreams could ever foresee. Thank you, football. With love, Rapha.”
