President William Ruto has condemned the unconstitutional change of government in Niger that led to the deposing of President Mohamed Bazoum, a democratically elected leader.

His has attracted different reactions from Kenyans across the social media platforms others supporting while others condemning it. President Ruto acknowledged that Africa suffered a serious setback in its democratic gains with the unconstitutional removal of President Bazoum. The People of Niger’s aspirations for constitutional democracy were thwarted by a coup d’état, a clear violation of democratic norms and principles. The condemnation from the Kenyan President highlights the significance of respecting the will of the people and the rule of law in the pursuit of democracy.

In line with the rest of the world, Ruto strongly condemned the unconstitutional act in Niger, which led to the unlawful seizure of power. Such actions undermine the efforts made by African nations to foster and uphold democratic values, endangering the progress towards a more democratic and self-determined continent. His unequivocal condemnation emphasizes the need for Africa and the global community to stand united against such actions.

Throughout Africa’s history, the continent has strived to nurture the principles of democracy, aligning
itself with the aspirations of its people for freedom and self-determination. He drew attention to Article 4(p) of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which explicitly rejects any unconstitutional change of government.
