Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for the remarks he made about the government and alleged plans of his impeachment.

During a press briefing in Kisumu, ODM Chairperson Glady Wanga told off Gachagua for talking about issues that do not help solve the problems facing Kenyans.

She said the work of the president and his deputy is to sort issues affecting the country.

“Kenyans expect leaders to address challenges like youth unemployment, public sector waste, and corruption. These are issues affecting the entire country, not just one region. This is what Kenyans expect when someone from the presidency addresses the public,” Homa Bay Governor said.

Wanga said Gachagua’s “bitter remarks” come from his previous views that the Kenya Kwanza government belongs to shareholders (those who voted for the regime).

“My interpretation of the Deputy President’s bitter remarks is that they stem from his earlier assertion that Kenya is a shareholding company, where only certain communities are entitled to leadership positions,” Wanga noted.

ODM further distanced itself from Gachagua’s impeachment allegation, arguing that they “know nothing about it.”

ODM remarks come amid rising political fallout between President William Ruto and his deputy. This rift has culminated in a section of Mt Kenya MPs taking side with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, installing him as their spokesperson.

Kindiki’s installation by more than 50 legislators from Mt Kenya region has rattled Gachagua’s allies, with many of them likening the second in command’s woes to that of Ruto when he served as deputy to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On Friday 20th September, Gachagua said his team’s access to President Ruto’s diary was recently revoked as he explains his absence at key events, including a church service in Nyeri where Gachagua failed to attend. He stated that any impeachment motion against him will have to be approved by the president.

“Any motion of impeachment will not find its way to the House unless the President approves…Ruto told me he is not aware of any impeachment plans,” Gachagua said on Friday.
