A recent report indicates that Kenya leads the world in time spent on social media.
The study by Cable.co.uk highlights that Kenyans dedicate an average of 3 hours and 43 minutes daily to these platforms, far exceeding the global average of 2 hours and 23 minutes.
“The world spends a huge amount of time using social media too, with the latest research from GWI revealing that the ‘typical’ social media user now spends 2 hours and 23 minutes per day using social media,” the report states.
This positions Kenya ahead of other nations, with South Africa and Brazil following closely, where users spend an average of 3 hours and 37 minutes and 3 hours and 34 minutes, respectively.
Other notable countries include the Philippines, Nigeria, and Colombia, where users spend an average of 3 hours and 33 minutes, 3 hours and 23 minutes, and 3 hours and 22 minutes per day.
Furthermore, the study indicates that in 2023, the global social media user base grew by 266 million, amounting to an impressive 8.4 million new users every second.
Projections for 2024 suggest that humanity will collectively invest around 500 million years on social media.
Notably, regions along the western edge of the Persian Gulf show significant social media user ratios compared to their populations.
Experts note that the presence of large expatriate communities may distort these numbers, creating discrepancies between social media usage and actual demographic figures.
