President of Kenya, Dr William Ruto has unveiled a visionary plan to combat climate change and redefine Africa’s role in the global climate action arena. Speaking at the ongoing African Climate Summit in Nairobi, Ruto emphasized the imperative of altering the prevailing perceptions about Africa’s contribution to addressing the pressing issue of climate change.
The head of state announced the allocation of an Ksh7.2 billion to counties under the Financing Locally-LED Climate Action (FLLoCA) program. These substantial funds are earmarked to fortify Kenya’s climate resilience, with a specific focus on investments in agriculture, water resource management, and the conservation of natural resources.
In his address at the summit, Ruto stated that these monies will help to finance the local climate actions. “The grants, together with Ksh3 billion of county own-resource allocations, will finance local climate action priorities in agriculture, water, and natural resources management in every county,” Ruto said.
This remarkable financial commitment is set to empower local governments, enabling them to prioritize and implement effective climate action measures. His commitment to climate action seemed not to stop there. He presided over the launch of several pivotal initiatives, including the Long-Term Low Greenhouse Gas Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) for the period 2022-2050. Moreover, the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) for the years 2023-2027 and the Climate Change (Amendment) Act 2023 were introduced, solidifying Kenya’s unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability.
This bold and comprehensive plan, coupled with substantial financial backing, marks a turning point in
Kenya’s fight against climate change. These initiatives serves as a beacon for the entire African continent but also as a notable contribution to the global struggle against one of humanity’s most critical challenges.
