The selection panel to pick Chairperson and commissioners of the Independent, Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been fully constituted to officially start its work.

The team will be responsible for picking a new chairperson and six commissioners for the IEBC. This comes at the backdrop of pressure from civil organisations and the opposition for IEBC to be constituted.

The offices of IEBC commissioners fell vacant after the tenure of the last IEBC officials led by the then IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati came to an end in January 2023.

The absence of the electoral commission’s leadership has delayed the by-election in several elective seats across the country. Boundary delimitation, which also falls within IEBC’s mandate, has also been in disarray.

In a press statement seen by JEDCA MEDIA the selection panel promised to work honestly and fairly. The chairperson of the panel Dr Nelson Makanda  acknowledged the significance of the commission’s role.

“We are committed to following the law and making sure we choose the best people for these important jobs,” Dr Makanda said.

The selection process will involve inviting qualified Kenyans to apply, reviewing their applications, and conducting interviews. The panel will then send the best candidates to the President, who will make the final decision. The selection panel is expected to complete its work within the next few months..
