NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 23 – The Ethics And Anti Corruption commission (EACC) has arrested two regular police who extorted money and goods from a local businessman in Nairobi and demanded a bribe for the goods to be returned.
The two police officers namely; PC Raphael Nzioka(No.67335) and PC Nancy Kerubo(No.245796) who were based in Eastleign North Police Station, Starehe Sub-county reportedly confiscated kes 300,000 worth of mobile phone stock from the business man who operates a mobile phone shop in Nairobi CBD.
Hence the trader then saw it better seek help from EACC after the two officers demanded a bribe of ksh 100,000 in order to return the mobile phone stock.
Detectives from the EACC managed to capture the officers on Thursday 19th October evening while the two were receiving the bribe which happened after verification of the allegation by the commission.
Further the Commission has shown its concern over the inclining reports regarding the extortions conducted by police officers from the citizens who are not facing any legitimate accusation of violating the law.
“The commission is increasingly receiving reports of outright extortion by police officers who are not investigating anything touching the victims.
The emerging trend shows that it is no longer bribery to forbear law enforcement action, but pure extortion of money from citizens who are not facing any legitimate accusation of violating the law,” stated the commission on their statement.
EACC has thus urged the police commanders at all levels to take up responsibility of ensuring that officers under their command refrain from such despicable acts that the commission has not only termed them as immoral but also criminal.
