World 800m champion Mary Moraa clinched her third Diamond League victory of the season in Zurich on Thursday by running a smart, tactical race.

She stayed behind her rivals in the first lap before executing a powerful finishing kick in the final 400m to secure the win. Moraa, the Olympic bronze medallist, crossed the finish line in 1:57.08, with Great Britain’s Georgia Bell taking second in 1:57.94, and American Addison Wiley coming in third with a time of 1:58.16.

Having recently set a new 600m world record in Berlin last weekend, Moraa showed no signs of fatigue from her previous efforts, opting instead to conserve her energy until the critical moment.

Shafiqua Maloney initially led the race, attempting to exhaust her competitors, but she faded in the second lap and finished seventh, while Moraa easily outpaced the remaining field.

This marks Moraa’s third Diamond League triumph this season, following wins in Doha and Lausanne, along with a second-place finish at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

With this victory, Moraa now ties with Britain’s Jemma Reekie at the top of the 800m Diamond League standings with 31 points. Reekie finished fourth, earning five more points.

Moraa heads to the Diamond League Final in Brussels with high confidence, aiming to claim the $30,000 (Ksh3.9 million) prize and the Diamond League Trophy, hoping to improve on her fourth-place finish from last year.
