Gubernatorial Impeachments Since Devolution Inception

Since devolution set rolling in 2013, several governors have undergone either impeachment trial, or total impeachment.

Gubernatorial impeachment in Kenya occurs when the person has been found guilty of gross misconduct, abuse of office, or other constitutional violations.

Martin Wambora

Martin Wambora, former governor Embu County, was the first governor to be impeached. His impeachment motion was tabled twice, in 2014 , the accusation include misappropriation of County funds which was of irregular procurement of maize seeds and misuse of funds.

The second allegation in 2015, he was accused of the abuse of Office it included misuse of funds allocated for the refurbishment of Embu Stadium.

However, both impeachments were nullified by the courts, and he was able to resume his position as governor.

Ferdinand Waititu

Ferdinand Waititu, former Kiambu County governor was Impeached in 2020. Waititu was impeached by the Kiambu County Assembly in December 2019, while the Senate upheld the impeachment in January 2020.

He was accused of corruption and other allegations which includes overseeing irregular tender awards amounting to 588 million Kenya shillings in county contract which were allegedly given to companies linked to his family and close associates.

He was also accused of gross misconduct by diverting county resources for personal use. The allegations were embezzlement of public funds meant for county development projects and failure to follow the due process in procurement.

Mike Sonko

Mike Mbuvi Sonko, former Nairobi county governor was impeached in December 2020. He was accused of corruption allegations.

He allegedly failed to adhere to procurement laws, particularly in relation to contracts and the allocation of funds of his county Nairobi County.

There were also reports on abuse of the office for personal gain. he had confrontations with government officials and inappropriate use of social media, which was included as gross misconduct.

Mohamed Abdi

Mohamed Abdi Mohamud, former Wajir County governor was Impeached in 2021. He was impeached by the Wajir County Assembly, which was confirmed by the senate in May 2021. He was removed from office over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office and violation of the constitution.

The allegation includes failing to manage the county effectively, leading to a collapse in service delivery, particularly in the healthcare sector which lead to death and suffering of many people.

Kawira Mwangaza

Kawira Mwangaza governor Meru county. With her third impeachment process halted by the court, Kawira mwangaza has been accused of abuse of office, corruption and Gross misconduct in the past two years. The allegation includes removal of public service servants which was against the constitution.

These allegations mostly applied to her first, second and even third impeachment.
