Kenya’s Janeth Chepng’etich clocked 33:37.00 to win the women’s 10,000 after the four-day running event began at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Ethiopia took the next three places as Belew Kefale (33:38.37) and Tekan Behre (33:51.50) won silver and bronze respectively. Another Ethiopian Ayana Mulisa (34:45.37) rounded out the top four.

Chepng’etich, the only Kenyan in the arena, took on a full Ethiopian team to become the supreme. She led Behre and Mulisa in the first 300km on the final lap before passing Kefale in the final race down the home stretch.

Samuel Chege clocked 21.14 minutes to reach the final. Stern Noel of Malawi clocked 21.45 to finish second while Beninese Jérôme Kounnou finished third with 21.67. Uganda’s Allan Gobi clocked 21.67 to take third place.
