In a marvelous feat at the world championships, Faith Kipyegon, has won two gold medals for Kenya. The 29-year-old Kenyan athlete has etched her name in distance running history.
Kipyegon, is already holding three world records this season, accomplished an extraordinary dual triumph by securing gold medals in both the 1500m and 5000m events. This exceptional achievement makes her the first woman ever to win both events at a single world championship.
Just four days after becoming the first woman to clinch a third 1500m gold, Kipyegon demonstrated her unparalleled prowess once again in the 5000m final. In a nail-biting finish, she outpaced her Dutch rival Sifan Hassan, an Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10,000m. She clocked an impressive time of 14:53.88, a mere 23 hundredths of a second ahead of Hassan.
Her journey to victory this season has been a jaw dropping feat. She had earlier shattered world records in the 1500m, mile, and 5000m events, showcasing her dominance and versatility on the track. What’s more, her triumph in the 5000m marked her return to the event after a hiatus since 2015.
Looking ahead, Kipyegon is now poised to set her sights on an unprecedented achievement at the upcoming Olympics. If successful, she could become the first woman in history to secure gold medals in both the 1500m and 5000m events at a single Olympic Games.
In addition to Kipyegon’s awe-inspiring victories, the world championships also witnessed other notable achievements. Swedish athlete Mondo Duplantis successfully defended his title in the pole vault, adding to his remarkable collection of an Olympic gold medal and six world records. Canadian athlete Marco Arop claimed the 800m title, becoming the second Canadian man to attain a world championship title on the track.
However, the U.S. women’s 4x400m relay faced a setback as they were disqualified in the heats due to a relay exchange zone violation. This disqualification could potentially mark the first time the U.S. fails to secure a gold medal since 2015 and a medal since 2005.
With the world championships drawing to a close to an end, all eyes are now set on the final day, which will feature the 800m final with the promising Athing Mu and the highly anticipated 4x400m relay finals.
