NAIROBI Kenya Oct 23-President William Ruto has announced that there will be no El Nino rains. This comes even as measures to mitigate the heavy rains were underway.
Speaking on Sunday during a church service,Ruto dismissed the weatherman’s predictions saying that there will be short rains not El Nino. He added that farmers be prepared to produce more yields so that the country will have enough food by January.
“You recently heard that our country is going to have El Nino but who is God, … There will just be heavy rainfall. Even with that heavy rainfall that will get we have prepared our farmers to produce enough yields so that we can have food in January,” Ruto said.
The abrupt change of the weatherman’s predictions has elicited reactions across the country with Kenyans casting doubts on the reliability of the forecasters.
In preparednes of El ñino,The national and county governments had laid down a plans to mitigate heavy rainfall with more than Ksh8 billion set aside to deal with devastating effects of El Nino.
Nairobi county for instance had assembled machinery and a team to unclog water channels and sewers in readiness for El Nino. Additionally, the county had purchased boats and rafts that would have been used ferry people in flooded places.
