President William Ruto has said that the government will pay rent for Kenyans living on lands set aside for affordable houses until the houses are ready for occupation.

Speaking at a church service in Bahati, Nairobi County Sunday, Ruto allayed fears of eviction, announcing that residents of the estates would be given money to rent elsewhere as they await eviction. the body stopped. 

“There will be no evictions, every Kenyan will have a place to live while we wait for a house to be built, that is our job. we will give you money for two years to rent a house. when we finish, you stay in your house,” said Ruto.

While stressing that his government is committed to providing affordable housing to Kenyans living in poverty, Ruto said construction work is expected to begin on a grand scale by the end of 2024.

“Within the next five years, we should have 1 million people in Kenya to start respecting the living conditions of Kenyans.”

The state housing spokesman Hussein Mohamed had said that the government wants to create a new generation of homeowners under the program by building 250,000 houses per year for low-income people.

This comes as Chief Justice Marha Koome says that the Judiciary didn’t enter into an agreement with the Executive to okay the housing levy.

Koome said the president was misinterpreted or quoted out of context as the judiciary cannot enter into contract with executive. Additionally, there is a case before court challenging Ruto’s housing levy which the CJ says the court will determine it independently.

Lat week, Ruto suggested that he had inked a deal with judiciary to continue collecting housing levy.
