The government has disbursed the final tranche of education funds, totaling Sh22 billion, for the 2024/2025 financial year, according to National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo.
Speaking on the matter, Kiptoo confirmed that the disbursements cover Free Day Secondary Education, Junior Secondary School capitation, and Free Primary Education, assuring that the government is now up to date with all scheduled payments.
“We had a budget of Sh54.6 billion for Free Day Secondary Education this financial year. These funds were to be released in three phases, and I can confirm that all three tranches have been paid. The final release of Sh11.6 billion was made on May 19,” Kiptoo said.

He added that the budget for Junior Secondary School stood at Sh30.4 billion, with the last payment of Sh8.9 billion also disbursed on May 19.
For Free Primary Education, the entire allocation of Sh8.4 billion has now been released, including the final Sh1.4 billion installment, which was also paid on the same date.
Kiptoo emphasized that the National Treasury had fulfilled its responsibility by transferring the full funds to the Ministry of Education.
The confirmation comes in response to concerns raised by school heads and stakeholders over delayed capitation funds, which had left many institutions grappling with financial strain and growing debts.
The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) had recently voiced frustration over what it described as persistent delays in releasing second-term funds, highlighting the significant pressure this placed on school operations across the country.
