President William Ruto has praised the ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, calling it a remarkable step towards normalcy in the region. Speaking during the 21st Extra-Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State in Bujumbura, Burundi on Wednesday. Ruto thanked the Heads of State for their efforts in resolving the conflict and enhancing peace and security in the area. He further announced the appointment of a civilian officer will help shield the East African Regional Force from political and public affairs matters which he believes will improve the situation. “This will enhance peace and security in the region,” he said.
The President lauded DRC President Félix Tshisekedi for facilitating the deployment that led to the stop in the killing of women and children. Annette Mutaawe and Andrea Malueth were also congratulated on their appointments as EAC Deputy Secretary Generals.
The summit was attended by other regional leaders, including Burundi President Évariste Ndayishimiye, Tanzania Vice-President Dr Isidori Mpango, and Prime Minister of Rwanda Dr Édouard Ngirente, among others.
