A new report by Committee on Administration and Internal Security has placed northrift local leaders at the center of banditry claiming that politicians are working with criminals in order to keep the region unstable thus undermining peace efforts in the region.

The Committee on Administration and Internal Security chaired by Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo alleged that politicians have been providing weapons and resources to aid banditry in order to gain political influence and annex their neighboring communities’ land.

The report highlights that North Rift is experiencing insecurity due to banditry and cattle rustling. It also stated that the bandits have vandalized schools and damaged properties leading to reduced economic activities in the region.

“Overall the primary causes of conflict and criminal activity such as banditry, theft and violence remain rooted in resource disputes, political instigations, cultural significance and inter-communal conflicts,” the report reads in part.

The Committee wants the Ministry of Interior to initiate investigation into the criminal network in the region to dismantle it and subsequently find the hideouts of bandits.

It also wants Kindiki-led ministry to commence a disarmament campaign in banditry prone counties.

“The Ministry of Interior and National Administration should initiate a disarmament exercise aimed at confiscating all illicit firearms held by unlicensed civilians in all areas in the six counties,” the report reads in part.

It also suggested that any leader found frustrating the exercise should be arrested.
