Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has said the charges against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza were too weak, revealing her impeachment was a deliberate decision by Kenya Kwanza Senators.
Osotsi said senators initially agreed that the charges could not justify the ouster of Kawira but they changed their minds hours before the voting took place in the senate.
“Most senators agreed that the charges against the Meru governor were too weak and not impeachable. However, two hours before the election, our colleagues from UDA change their position and decide to impeach Kawira Mwangaza and we on the Azimio side stood firm and said no we can’t allow it not because we were against it the people of Meru but to the charges presented to us were too weak to impeach a governor,” Osotsi said in an interview at Citizen TV.
Mwangaza was impeached on 20th August 2024, with most senators voting to kick her out of office coming from Kenya Kwanza.
Some of the charges which were leveled against Mwangaza included gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office among other charges.
A total of 26 Senators voted to uphold the charges against Mwangaza with four voting and 14, mostly from Azimio abstaining from voting.
Osotsi’s revelations adds to the speculations that Kenya Kwanza regime had intentions to oust Mwangaza who was appearing in the Senate for the third time for impeachment motion.
Mwangaza’s government in Meru has undergone serious challenges including outright misunderstanding with Members of County Assembly of Meru, which has culminated in three attempts to remove her in office.
Her latest impeachment was halted by the High Court, stopping the Senate Speaker Amazon Kingi from declaring Meru governor’s seat vacant through a Gazette Notice.
This came after Mwangaza went to the court to fight against her impeachment.
The case will be mentioned on 17th September 2024.
