The Ministry of Health has dismissed reports of an alleged outbreak of a flu-like Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Kenya.

While addressing Kenyans on Tuesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, clarified that the HMPV is not a new virus and that it has been documented as a respiratory illness in Kenya.

“We are happy to confirm that currently, there is no reported increase in the expected number of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms in our health facilities,” the CS assured Kenyans.

According to CS Barasa, no case has been reported but the national public health surveillance system remains on high alert to contain any potential HMPV outbreak in Kenya.

CS Deborah also encouraged individuals experiencing severe respiratory symptoms, including persistent high fever or difficulty breathing, to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.

“We urge Kenyans to remain calm but vigilant. Observing basic public health practices is our collective responsibility in curbing the spread of respiratory illnesses,” CS Deborah emphasized.

She further advised citizens to report any unusual cases through the Ministry’s toll-free hotline at 719.

The CS assured the public of continued monitoring and regular updates regarding HMPV.

HMPV, was discovered first in 2001. It is a respiratory virus which leads to severe respiratory illnesses, particularly in children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems.

HMPV outbreaks have been observed seasonally in different parts of the world, and often peaking during late winter and spring in high temperature regions.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HMPV infections often go undiagnosed due to their similarity to other respiratory illnesses such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets, direct contact, or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms ranges from cold-like conditions to severe complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
