March 5 – The death of Kenyan police officer in United States of America has raised concerns on what transpired.

Inspector Walter Nyakieya Nyamato died in Washington DC, and so far little has been known on the cause of his death.

The US government took over the investigation and declined to give autopsy report arguing that the matter can only be handle by state agencies that will communicate through Kenyan embassy in US.

Nyamato was a personal Assistant Noor Gabow, the Deputy Inspector General of Police.

The deceased inspector was travelling to Haiti in a company of other 9 officers. They stopped in US before proceeding to the Caribbean nation where a thousand Kenyan police are expected to be deployed to restore calm in the war-torn country.

According to the information received by family members in his backyard in Kisii, Nyamato was found death in a hotel room in US by his colleagues who relayed the information to his family.

In an interview by Citizen TV, his father said he received the shocking news that his son was found lying dead in the hotel bed with further inquiries to ascertain his demise blocked by US investigators who took over the matter.

Connection with Haiti Mission

The death of a Kenyan police officer on his way to Haiti raised question on the feasibility of the Haiti mission amidst concerns raised in Kenya about it.

In January, the High Court quashed Kenya’s mission in Haiti arguing that it lacked “reciprocal arrangement.” The constitution of Kenya states that authorities can send troops to foreign soil on the basis that the recipient nation can reciprocate it, thus ruling it null and void.

Haiti Prime Minister visited Kenya on 29 February to sign a deal with President William Ruto on how the arrangement will work.

Haiti has  seen increased gang violence since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. Moise death has been linked to investigations that he was undertaking on drug traffickers.

Reuters reported that Moise was compiling a list of people involved in drug trade, and had plans to give the names to US government. However, he was assassinated before he concluded it.

As Nyamato family grieves the demise of their son, it’s up to US government to tell them what transpired and who is behind his death.
