The Kenya Films Commission has called out content creators to register and formalize their work in order to get support from relevant authorities.

Speaking at the Content Creators Gala event at Nairobi Friday 23 August, Kenya Films Commission CEO Timothy Owase emphasized on the need for formalization of digital content creation as businesses so that creators can get value for their work and for all creators to understand their obligations.

He said content creation provides a great opportunity for creators to improve their economic status as well as contributing to national cohesion.

“Content creation can improve the economic and social well-being of a creator. They should therefore formalize their businesses in digital spaces. By doing so, you will know your obligations because storytelling is fundamental in national cohesion,” Owase said.

While content creators have come out to castigate regulators from interfering with their art, Owase said registering enables creators to get assistance from relevant authorities including license to film at different parts of the country, and to know their obligations.

“Engaging content creators is very important because it enables us as regulators to work with them and for creators to know what is required of them,” he said.

Regulators claim that creators are not ready to abide by the industry rules while creators view regulators as preys seeking to get a pie of their hard-earned money.

He further said the government is planning to set up film hubs across the country to help creators to tell stories across the country.
